Venice, worth knowing.

A few things about Venice that make the trip better once you know them, each checked against at least two sources (linked below it). Then a handful of questions to bring with you, because the conversations you have somewhere new tend to stay attached to the place.

Fun facts about Venice

  1. 1Murano glass has a fiery backstory: in 1291 Venice's Great Council moved the glass furnaces out of the city to Murano to cut the risk of fire. Glassmaking has stayed on the island ever since.Source: Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia; Wikipedia
  2. 2A gondola is made of 280 hand-crafted pieces from eight different kinds of wood, and it's built slightly lopsided on purpose: the asymmetry lets a single oar steer it.Source: Comitato Giovani, Italian National Commission for UNESCO; Wikipedia
  3. 3The stone Rialto Bridge you see today was finished in 1591, designed by Antonio da Ponte to replace earlier wooden bridges. It still carries rows of little shops under its arcades.Source: Italia.it; Wikipedia
  4. 4The Grand Canal snakes through the heart of Venice, yet only four bridges cross it. Until 1854, the Rialto was the only one.Source: Italia.it; Venezia Autentica
  5. 5Venice is split into six districts called sestieri, three on each side of the Grand Canal, and each one keeps its own house numbers. Handy to know when you're hunting for an address!Source: Italy Magazine; History Walks Venice
